How to Prepare Your Property for Ozone Treatment

How to Prepare Your Property for Ozone TreatmentOzone treatment is one of the most powerful tools for eliminating stubborn odors in homes, vacation rentals, and offices – but to get the best (and safest) results, a little preparation goes a long way.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make sure your space is ready.

✅ 1. Make sure no people, pets or plants are inside

For safety, ozone treatment works in unoccupied spaces only.

  • All humans, pets, and houseplants must leave the area.
  • Aquarium fish? Cover or remove the tank.
  • Schedule your treatment when no one needs to be inside.

✅ 2. Tidy Up the Space

Ozone destroys odors best when the area is already clean.

  • Remove trash, dirty laundry, pet beds, or dishes.
  • Vacuum carpets, mop floors, and wipe surfaces.
  • Open closet doors, drawers, and cabinets you want treated.

✅ 3. Close Doors and Windows

For ozone to reach effective levels, the space must be sealed.

  • Close all windows and exterior doors.
  • Block large gaps under doors (use a towel if needed).
  • Turn off any HVAC systems that draw outside air.

✅ 4. Air Circulation Helps

Ozone needs to move to work.

  • Keep interior doors open so ozone flows through bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways.
  • Turn on ceiling or box fans (if available), pointing them away from the generator.

✅ 5. Remove or Cover Delicate Items (Optional)

Ozone is safe for most materials, but if you want to be extra careful:

  • Cover precious artwork, natural rubber, or antique leather.
  • Remove fresh produce, open food, or fragile electronics.

✅ 6. Set the Timer and Exit

Once everything is ready, the technician will:

  • Place the ozone generator in a central location.
  • Set the timer based on room size and odor severity.
  • Leave the building immediately and lock it up.

✅ 7. After Treatment: Ventilate

Once the cycle is complete:

  • Wait at least 30–60 minutes before entering.
  • Open windows and doors to allow remaining ozone to convert back to oxygen.
  • The space is safe once you no longer smell that “fresh” ozone scent.

🚗 What About Cars?

Preparing a car is similar:

  • Remove belongings and trash
  • Close windows/doors
  • Set the AC to recirculate mode during treatment so ozone flows through vents

Final Tip

The cleaner and more sealed your space is before treatment – the more effective the ozone will be at permanently removing odors.
